Zahra Hassan

I'm a freshman from South Florida thinking about majoring in economics and minoring in art history (which I tell people I like to study 'cause I can evaluate male nudes). In the future, I want to somehow contribute to ending the U.S. wealth gap, whether it be through doing economics research, policy making, or volunteering my time and money to non-profit organizations. I enjoy thrifting, playing French Horn, and going on walks with friends.

L's Taken

"Thank you for applying but..."

  • American Predatory Lending Bass Connections

  • Several Muser Projects

  • Scale and Coin

  • DSP

  • Duke Impact Investing

  • TAMID

  • SOFC

  • Data+

  • Duke Engage Miami

  • Several attempts at finding a boyfriend

Things I thought I'd finish but never did

Everyday L's of life

  • Spilling coffee/food on clothes immediately after doing laundry

  • Losing against the easiest chess setting on

  • Hurting myself while climbing/jumping off my lofted dorm bed

  • Ordering the wrong food on the Mobile Order app

  • Getting lost even with Google Maps

  • Bungling French sentences in front of the class

  • Waking up five minutes before an 8:30 class

  • Smell testing clothes to justify not doing laundry

  • “You are receiving this text/e-mail to notify you that your DukeCard has been turned off due to failure to complete your daily symptom monitoring.”

On the Bright Side

Memories I made when I wasn't working/studying

  • Talking about the Duke Marriage Pact algorithm over coffee with my favorite Econ professor

  • Looking up at the stars at the Duke pond with friends

  • Thrifting the coolest pair of jeans during a date

  • Dozens of late night Merchants-on-Points feasts

  • Scarfing down loaves of cheesecake factory brown bread unequally shared among seven people

  • Spinning wildly in the Wellness center egg chairs

  • Trashing finance bros over coffee with Professor Fullenkamp

  • Celebrating five different friends’s birthdays in April

  • Buying out Lobby Shop’s non perishable goods with my hall mates to donate to a food bank

  • Listening to one friend recount the entire history of Kanye West’s life and albums

  • Painting a Trump pumpkin (Trumpkin) that my friends and I smashed after Biden won the 2020 election

Things I've learned that will still matter in 10 years

  • I don't need a ton of material things to be happy (just ask Marie Kondo!)

  • No one actually knows what they're doing and that's okay

  • There's no point in competing with other people if I don't want the prize

  • Never settle for less than what I deserve

TV shows, movies, and books I've enjoyed

  • Bojack Horseman

  • Breaking Bad

  • The Queen's Gambit

  • The Picture of Dorian Gray

  • Survivor

  • The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up (Marie Kondo)

Things I'm proud of that you won't see on my resume

Unconventional skills

Quirks that make me who I am

  • My super expressive writing style

  • My love of artwork and art history (even though I can't draw)

  • What my friends describe as overly "facetious/sarcastic" humor

  • My collection of over 40 jars of peanut butter

  • The sheer amount of time and ways I can complain about le français

  • My ability to be frugal wherever I am

Small joys in my life

  • The cat pictures my parents and little sister send me

  • My morning cup of coffee before I start classes

  • Finding amazingly unique clothes while thrifting

  • FaceTime calls with my best friend back at home

  • Goodie bags from my RA

  • Receipts with smiley faces and "Good Morning!"s from Bella Union

  • Getting an email from an old professor I adore

  • Seeing the leaves fall in Duke Gardens

  • Blowing wild dandelions on the way to WU

  • Finding Peaches in Mama Bean when they’re in the mood to get petted

  • Sweet, sweet sleep after a long day of classes

Obstacles I have overcome

Things I've done that pushed me out of my comfort zone

Failures that seemed like the end of the world back then but don't matter in hindsight

Leaps of Faith

Life events that have made me stronger
